After missing last week’s events due to ongoing chemotherapy treatments, Grant Junghans and the Shop Quik Racing team set sail for a pair of events in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental this past Friday and Saturday, Aug. 21-22.
Friday’s show at the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., saw Junghans earn the Sybesma Graphics Pole Award during heat race qualifying, and then starting inside the second row for the 40-lap
main event. Unfortunately, the car spun on lap 2 and, after a 20-minute red flag delay for a medical emergency in the grandstands, tagged the rear of the field for the remaining 33 laps.
Nonetheless, he powered his way through the field and brought home a top-10 finish.
On Saturday, rain washed out the event at the Salina Highbanks Speedway in Pryor Creek, Okla., so the team made tracks to the Central Missouri Speedway in Warrensburg, Mo., for some USRA
Modified action and a $1,000-to-win feature race. On a very muddy and fast track, Junghans netted a fourth-place finish.
The next show for the monster modifieds of the USMTS will happen Wednesday, Sept. 2, at the historic Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City, Iowa—the first of five straight nights of racing to
celebrate the Labor Day Weekend.
