This past weekend took Grant Junghans and the Shop Quik Racing team to five tracks in Iowa and Minnesota over five days during the Labor Day holiday for some USMTS competition.
Action kicked off at the Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City, Iowa, on Wednesday, Sept. 2, with Junghans taking control of the main event at the drop of the green flag. Jesse Sobbing snuck past Junghans after the seventh lap, and then Rodney Sanders tried to make the pass for second when the two made contact and Sanders wound up facing the wrong direction at the top of turn 2. Sobbing led the pack back to green and Junghans got over the treacherous cushion in the first corner as mechanical problems forced him to retire from the race.
Thursday found the team at the Fairmont Raceway in Fairmont, Minn., and for the second straight night it was survival of the fittest with an over-watered half-mile racetrack that made for fast and furious racing, but a rough surface that shook every bolt on the car loose. After transferring out of the "B" Main, Junghans again retired--this time on the first lap of the race.
On Friday, better track conditions greeted the competitors at the Chateau Raceway in Lansing, Minn., as well as the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., on Saturday. But the same sour luck also followed Junghans to both tracks as he was unable to transfer out of the "B" Mains either night.
The weekend wrapped up at the Cresco Speedway in Cresco, Iowa, on Sunday but more gremlins returned and Junghans headed home with an 18th-place finish after completing just 13 laps in the feature race.
