Grant Junghans and crew were plagued with bad luck during the USMTS Southern Series season opener at the Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas. The number 2 ShopQuik Racing entry qualified for one of the three feature events, with tire and other problems taking him out of contention.
Night One (Thursday):
-Grant was scheduled to start on the inside of the fifth row in heat race number two. Sixty-one USMTS Modifieds have signed in for night one of the 3rd Annual Texas Winternationals.
-Grant was up to the sixth spot on the first lap. The car began showing signs of smoke, and Junghans eventually brought out the caution after spinning coming into turn two with a blown valve cover gasket. Grant started 9th in the first of three B Mains, but was the victim of a flat left rear tire caused by contact with another competitor.
Night Two (Friday): Grant came from the fourth spot to take the lead in heat race number 3. Junghans fought off challenges from Jason Hughes to take the heat race victory. Junghans redrew eighth position, and fought an ill handling race car in the feature to a 20th place finish.
Night Three (Saturday):
Seventy cars were at the Houston Raceway Park for the $5,000 to win event. Grant had made his way up into the fourth position from his sixth place starting spot early in the Eibach Springs Heat Race number 4 before a ignition coil failed. Junghans was forced to start in the 19th and final position in B Main number two. The qualifying feature went 15 laps caution free, and Grant failed to transfer to the feature with his eleventh place finish.
